IU became part of the Melon Music Awards 2021's history.
Only a few artists have already won Daesang – one of the highest achievements an idol can ever score in the K-pop industry. Several Korean award-giving bodies offer them to artists, including the Seoul Music Awards and Golden Disk Awards.
Most recently, the Melon Music Awards gave away several Daesangs to K-pop groups and artists, two of which directly went on IU's belt.
IU Wins 2 Daesangs
Over the weekend, the Melon Music Awards 2021 gave its four Daesangs (Grand Prizes) to IU, BTS, and aespa. Despite being a soloist, IU outshined both groups and brought home two out of the four awards.
She bagged a total of five awards – Best Song Writer, Best Solo (Female), Top 10 Bonsang, Album of the Year, and Artist of the Year. The two latter awards were both grand prizes. It became IU's greatest comeback since she last appeared on the awards show in 2017, where she also won Album of the Year, Best Song Writer, and Top 10 Artists (Bonsang).
Following the milestone, IU gave a heartfelt message after receiving the Artist of the Year award, thanking her fans for the support and acknowledging other artists' hard works this year. For the singer, being the recipient of the honor is a lot of weight. Still, she pledged to carry the title and make more music next year.
"Next year, I want to meet more people from a closer distance. Because Uaena [fan club name] was here today, I was able to feel like I really got an award. Uaenas, I got five trophies, are you proud? I'm glad that I can make Uaenas' shoulders stand proud. I hope that the day will soon come when we can enjoy this with all the K-pop fans. I love you," she went on, as quoted by Soompi.
When she received the Album of the Year award, she told the crowd she worked hard to win it. After successfully reaching her goal, she revealed she will work harder than ever for her fans.
