Charlie Day, who writes a number of the show’s episodes, believed the series wouldn’t run much longer. He hinted that the 16th season might be its end.

“You know what it is, we’ve done a lot,” Day said, via Cheat Sheet. “We’ve done a lot of these. I don’t know how long we can keep ‘em up.”

Fans have already seen The Gang from Paddy’s pub “cover lots of hot button issues.” They have tackled issues about abortion, a crack epidemic, the #MeToo movement, and the pandemic.

Mac (Rob McElhenney) has already come out. They have also played laser tag, done a noir movie, and made a flashback to the 1980s roller rink. That said, Day seems to be running out of ideas of what to feature next.

If truth be told, the previous season was shorter than the rest, only featuring eight episodes instead of the usual 10-episode season due to the COVID-19 limitations.

However, when the show was renewed for four more seasons in 2020, FX and the cast members themselves seemed to imply that it could go on forever, per ScreenRant.
