It: Chapter 2 Writer Teases Major Reunion Scene, Heartbreaking Surprise Ending

The Losers Club is all grown up and returning to Derry in It: Chapter 2. Fans of Stephen King's terrifying novel already know what to expect yet screenwriter Gary Dauberman insists that the film will have a surprise ending. In addition to that, he says that the conclusion could be heartbreaking.

In an interview with SlashFilm, Dauberman admitted that he was excited to work on the sequel to Andy Muschietti's 2017 adaptation. The Nun screenwriter confessed that he was especially looking forward to a particular sequence where Pennywise's former victims were first reunited.

"The Jade of the Orient is such a defining and iconic scene in the book. That was something I remember as a thing I was writing towards," Dauberman said. "It was like, 'Okay, coming up is Jade of the Orient. That's going to be super cool.' It was a nice signpost to write towards which I dug."

In the books, Jade of the Orient is the restaurant where the adult Losers Club recall the events that happened when they faced Pennywise. The reunion was somehow gruesome so this is definitely something to look forward to in Chapter 2.

Dauberman also hinted at the possibility that the film will have an unexpected conclusion that fans will appreciate. "The ending I think will satisfy the audience and maybe break their hearts a little bit," he said.

The novel certainly had a depressing conclusion yet there was a hopeful epilogue. There are a few key moments that might be left out but I'm hoping that the sequel doesn't go too far from the book's ending.

It: Chapter 2 is scheduled for release on September 6, 2019.
