The Mind Flayer has been the big bad since the start of the series and after its defeat in the third run of the show, many thought that would be the last it would ever be seen but is it alive in Stranger Things Season 4 Volume 2 and if so, how?
Is The Mind Flayer Still Alive in Stranger Things Season 4 Volume 2?
Everyone thought the Mind Flayer is gone for good when Eleven and the Hawkins gang fought it at the mall, making it the Battle of Starcourt, and for months, there were no activity whatsoever related to the villain nor the Upside Down.
However, in Stranger Things Season 4 Volume 2, it made another appearance in the show, but this time, in a different place and a different time.
It is in a different place, Russia, where Hopper, Joyce, and Murray found it contained in the prison where Hopper was detained for months. It turns out the Russians have a collection of the creatures of the Upside Down and it all break loose when all of them escaped in the finale.
Hopper, Joyce, and Murray came across a dying prison guard with huge claw marks on his face. When they asked what attacked, the prison guard tells them that it is the "shadows," pertaining to the Mind Flayer which consumes its victims through the mouth.

The Mind Flayer in a different time is also seen in Stranger Things Season 4 Volume 2. During the finale, the origins of the Mind Flayer was told and to everyone's surprise, Vecna/ Henry/ One and The Mind Flayer are connected to each other.
When Eleven sent One to the Upside Down, he wandered off of the new place where he was sent to. He encountered species of different kinds but there was one that amazed him the most, the one that could carry his plans with him to finally be the predator he wanted to be -- a dark reddish cloud with lightning.
That is the original form of the Mind Flayer before One used his powers on it to shape it like a spider, the animal that inspired him to be this sinister villain that he is right now.
Summing it down, it is still alive in Stranger Things Season 4 Volume 2 and ready to follow Vecna with the villain's plan of opening the gates of the Upside Down to the real world and taking over.
