That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime became a fan favorite when it started airing in 2018. This year, the second season finally started airing, and things are looking exciting. But if you're looking to delve more deeply into the story, we have good news! There are a light novel and an ongoing manga that you can check out. Here's all you need to know:

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime also known as Tensei Shitara Suraimu Data Ken, TenSura and Slime Isekaiis a fantasy shōnen series. It follows a working man in his late thirties who is murdered and gets reincarnated as a slime. The title is self-explanatory really. But while this sounds like an extremely weird premise, it is also very cool.

As is the case with another popular Isekai, Mushoku Tensei, our main character finds himself in a magical world where everything is possible. Being a slime doesn't stop him from making friends and living with purpose this time around, as his new form comes with perks. Through a spell called Gluttony, he can consume any entity and take its shape and mannerisms. Thus equipped, he takes the name Rimuru Tempest and sets on a quest to prove his worth.

The anime is based on a Japanese light novel series written by Fuse and illustrated by Mitz Vah. Like the light novel of Mushoku Tensei, it made its first online appearance in Shōsetsuka ni Narō, a Japanese user-generated website for free novel-publishing. As the series was extremely well-received, it started being published in print and several volumes are available in English through Yen Press.

The light novel is currently ongoing: volume 18 will be published in Japan on the 31st of March and the English translation will likely follow in due course.

Prior to the creation of the anime, That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime also got a manga adaptation, marketed as a shonen. The manga is also ongoing, with 16 volumes published so far. It is illustrated by Shiba.

As of 2021, there have been several manga spin-offs titled The Slime Diaries: That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime, That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime: The Ways of the Monster Nation, and That Time I Got Reincarnated (again!) as a Workaholic Slime. In the latter, Rimuru is reincarnated once more in the real world, but remains in his slime body. Do we sense a fondness for long titles?

Meanwhile, episodes of That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Season 2 air every Tuesday on Crunchyroll. Be sure to check them out, or try some other anime of the Winter 2021 season such as Cells as Work: Code Black and Kemono Jihen.
