Shogun is now on its final episodes, so it’s no surprise that it continues to be a trending topic. Surprisingly though, FX’s Shogun is also trending thanks to Rob Mcelhenney.

Mcelhenney became a major topic of conversation among Shogun viewers after the show’s eighth episode was released. That’s because one of the show’s characters looks like him.

Spoiler Warning: This article includes minor spoilers for Shogun, so proceed with caution.

Is Rob Mcelhenney in the Shogun 2024 TV Series?

Rob Mcelhenney is a popular actor who is best known for his role as Mac in FX’s It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, an ongoing comedy series that he co-created.

Aside from this series, Mcelhenney is also a star and a co-creator of the Apple TV+ comedy series Mythic Quest.

Unbeknownst to many, Mcelhenney had a cameo appearance in HBO’s Game of Thrones during the show’s eighth season. There, he appeared as an Ironborn soldier.

Because he has made a cameo in a prestige drama series, some fans even ask if he appeared in Shogun.

That is not the case as Mcelhenney is not part of the Shogun cast. Instead, Mcelhenney along with many viewers noted how one character has a close resemblance to him.

Episode 8 saw Lord Yoshii Toranaga meeting with his vassals, one of whom is Tomono, a samurai general in Edo.

Following the episode’s release, Mcelhenney shared on his personal X (formerly Twitter) account that he “has some questions” about the actor of Tomono due to their uncanny resemblance.

The post got a lot of reactions from fans, with many agreeing that Tomono looks a lot like him, enough that they even thought that Mcelhenney made a cameo appearance at first.

Of course, that is far from the case. After all, FX’s Shogun strives for authenticity by casting Japanese cast members for most of the roles, not to mention the controversy that will follow the series if Mcelhenney is cast as a Japanese character.
