Fumi Nikaidô is a Japanese actress and model who first burst into the scene in 2007. She has been active ever since, making appearances in various TV advertisements, including Tokyu Electric Railway and Koikeya Potato Chips in 2009/2010.

Nikaido secured her first regular role in the ANB Friday Night Drama, Atami no Sousakan, in 2010, while her first supporting role in the film industry was playing Hikari Horie in Koji Yakusho's Gamo no Abura (Toad's Oil).

Since then, Nikaido has expanded her portfolio, playing more significant roles in the period drama series Tempest as well as the CX drama Mirai Nikki Another: World (Future Diary: Another World).

So far, Nikaido has received a total of 4 wins for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress and 7 nominations.

She won Best Young Actress in 2011 for the Crime Drama Himizu, Best Supporting Actress in 2013 for Why Don't You Play in Hell?, and Best Actress in 2014 for her starring role as Hana in My Man.

Nikaido's popularity only grew from there, especially when she won the Screen International Rising Star Asia Award at 2014's New York Asian Film Festival.

Her recent works include Isao Yukisada's 2018 flick River's Edge and the popular 2020 drama series, Yell, where Nikaido plays a professional singer.

Apart from acting, she has also dabbled in a bit of modeling, more of which can be seen from her Instagram profile.

According to the biography on her official website, Sony Music Artists scouted her at the age of twelve after her exposure in being a part of the local publication, the Okinawa edition of "Picture Book of Beautiful Girls."

That said, let's get into more about what her role means for the FX series, Shogun.

Fumi is Lady Ochiba no Kata on FX's Shogun

Lady Ochiba no Kata is the "feared and admired mother" of the Heir, Yaechiyo, as the official character description says on FX Networks.

The Shogun series tells the fictionalized story of the clashing cultures and politics between the Dutch warship and 17th-century feudal Japan, and Nikaido's Lady Ochiba plays a key role in the plot.

While we have only had a glimpse of her in the second episode of Shogun, the characters' impressions of Lady Ochiba already imply how much they respect and fear her calculating personality.

As her character teaser indicated about Lady Ochiba: "You may think you know something about me. But that is precisely what I wish for you to think."

Meanwhile, the first two episodes of FX's Shogun are now available to stream on Hulu. The next episode is set to debut on the platform on March 5.
