Is Planters Trying to Rip-Off Baby Yoda with Baby Nut?

Everyone was wondering what Planters was up to when they killed off Mr. Peanut in an ad that came out in late January, but thanks to the Super Bowl, it was clear what the intention was—to introduce a new mascot.

As it turns out, Planters was making way for a rebrand that features who they call ‘Baby Nut'. Check it out:

Though it's a unique way to rebrand, a lot of people can't help but think that this new mascot is a bit derivative. Everyone knows the Baby Groot craze that followed with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, and we all know how Baby Yoda from The Mandalorian took over the internet last year. What are the odds that a baby peanut will sell better than the classic sophisticated peanut with a monocle?

It also goes without saying that Planters' celebrity death-themed campaign kind of caught a snag when real-life celeb Kobe Bryant died less than a week after the ad played. Either way, it seemed that Planters pushed through with the campaign, and we're getting some early reactions online; some are saying that the company is banking in on the baby craze, and others think that other "Baby" mascots—specifically Baby Yoda— are still superior.

Then again, if things don't work out, they can always just ‘grow' Baby Nut back into his traditional gentleman peanut. You have to give the PR guys points for trying something new.

We don't know what's next for Planters' Baby Nut, but you can always catch Baby Yoda on The Mandalorian now on Disney+.
