Netflix has an upcoming drama series based on the 2011 Fukushima disaster that happened in Japan. The series, directed by Nakata Hideo and Nishiura Masaki, is patterned after the hit limited series HBO and Sky show, Chernobyl.
The good news is that we finally have a release date on The Days show. Here's what we know about the show so far.
When Is Netflix Show, The Days, Coming Out?
Netflix revealed that the Japanese show, The Days, will be released in 2023. There are reports, however, that it will be coming out on June 1, 2023 for a global release.
This release date is not an official announcement from Netflix so it's important to take this with a grain of salt. If the release date holds true, however, the Netflix series will have a total of eight episodes.
What Is The Days Story About?
The official synopsis of The Days reads:
"Depicts the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident that occurred in 2011 over a period of 7 days. From the three perspectives of the government, corporate organizations, and those who put their lives on the line. It will approach what really happened on that day and in that place."
What Happened in the Fukushima Disaster?
In March 11, 2011, a nuclear accident happened in Ōkuma, Fukushima, Japan. Called the Fukushima Nuclear Disaster, the incident actually started from a 9.0-magnitude earthquake with its epicenter found just 45 miles east off the Tōhoku region's coast. Following the earthquake, a tsunami took place with waves as high as 14 meters.
Unfortunately, the man-made defenses were no match for these waves, which caused devastation in the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Plant. The lower parts of the reactor buildings experienced flooding and a loss of power. And this, in turn, led to the reactor cores to stop working. Thus, a total of three nuclear meltdowns happened. There were three hydrogen explosions, which led to radioactive contamination into the atmosphere. This caused Japanese officials to declare a 12-mile radius evacuation.
Is the Fukushima Plant Still Leaking Radiation?
In 2021, it was revealed that TEPCO continued to cool down the fuel cores with water; which is now contaminated by the radiation that leaked. And even though the radiation levels have since dropped, there are still some reactors that continue to leak.
There have been some cleanup and decontamination efforts that have allowed residents to return to their former homes. But it is still a far cry from the number of residents it used to have. And some are still hesitant to return to Fukushima following the incident.

Although the cast members of The Days have been revealed, their character names have not been announced. The show stars the following actors:
- Yakusho Koji
- Takenouchi Yutaka
- Kohinata Fumiyo
- Kobayashi Kaoru
- Musaka Naomasa
