In March 11, 2011, a nuclear accident happened in Ōkuma, Fukushima, Japan. Called the Fukushima Nuclear Disaster, the incident actually started from a 9.0-magnitude earthquake with its epicenter found just 45 miles east off the Tōhoku region's coast. Following the earthquake, a tsunami took place with waves as high as 14 meters.

Unfortunately, the man-made defenses were no match for these waves, which caused devastation in the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Plant. The lower parts of the reactor buildings experienced flooding and a loss of power. And this, in turn, led to the reactor cores to stop working. Thus, a total of three nuclear meltdowns happened. There were three hydrogen explosions, which led to radioactive contamination into the atmosphere. This caused Japanese officials to declare a 12-mile radius evacuation.

In 2021, it was revealed that TEPCO continued to cool down the fuel cores with water; which is now contaminated by the radiation that leaked. And even though the radiation levels have since dropped, there are still some reactors that continue to leak.

There have been some cleanup and decontamination efforts that have allowed residents to return to their former homes. But it is still a far cry from the number of residents it used to have. And some are still hesitant to return to Fukushima following the incident.
