Is Jurassic World: Dominion The End?

Jurassic World: Dominion (2022) is obliterating the global box office, and is on track to become the biggest film of 2022. But is Jurassic World: Dominion the end? According to the trailers it is, but producer Frank Marshall says otherwise.

Jurassic World: Dominion sees the return of Jurassic World characters Claire Dearing (Bryce Dallas Howard), Owen Grady (Chris Pratt), Maisie Lockwood (Isabella Sermon), and Dr. Henry Wu (BD Wong).

However, it also brings back Dr. Ellie Sattler (Ellie Dern), Dr. Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum), and Dr. Alan Grant (Sam Neill) from the original Jurassic Park Trilogy, who must join forces with Claire, Owen, Maisie, and Wu.

Jurassic World: Dominion is described as the "epic culmination to the entire series" and the "end to the Jurassic era". As per the official Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment website, here’s the synopsis for the film:

Dominion takes place four years after Isla Nublar has been destroyed. Dinosaurs now live -- and hunt -- alongside humans all over the world. This fragile balance will reshape the future and determine, once and for all, whether human beings are to remain the apex predators on a planet they now share with history’s most fearsome creatures.

There are some major spoilers ahead for Jurassic World: Dominion.

Jurassic World: Dominion takes place four years after the world-changing events of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018), in which dinosaurs are released into the North American wilderness following the incident at Lockwood Manor.

While we do get to see dinosaurs free-roaming, most of the film takes place at Biosyn Valley in Italy's Dolomites mountains, where dinosaurs have been collected from all around the world.

The plot centers on a Cretaceous locust horde, which Biosyn is using to control the global food supply market. In many ways, the issue of dinosaurs populating around the world is relegated to the background.

By the end of the movie, our heroes Owen, Claire, Maisie, Malcolm, Alan, and Ellie save the day, foiling Lewis Dodgson's nefarious plans. Henry Wu, who is responsible for creating the locusts, releases a pathogen to wipe them all out.

Ellie and Alan rekindle their romantic relationship and testify against Biosyn in Washington DC. Meanwhile, Claire and Owen return to their cabin in the Sierra Nevada mountains with Maisie.

There, they return baby raptor Beta, whom Biosyn had kidnapped, to Blue the raptor. The United Nations declare Biosyn Valley a sanctuary for the dinosaurs, while we see dinosaurs learning to co-exist with modern-day animals.

So, the gates are left wide open - none of the main characters are killed off, and not only are dinosaurs continuing to populate all around the world, we don't really spend that much time with this side of the movie.

Despite the end of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018), short films Battle at Big Rock (2019), and Jurassic World: Dominion The Prologue (2021), and all the trailers promising dinosaurs in the wild, we're still yet to see it in all its glory.

As such, there are plenty of opportunities to explore these problems. With that said, this is pretty much rounded off at the end of Jurassic World: Dominion, with the dinosaurs apparently having learned to co-exist with other animals.

On the other hand, we don't see evidence to suggest that they're getting on well with humans, although we do see a young girl feeding a moros intrepidus near a pond in Washington DC while Alan and Ellie prepare for court.

In fact, the human/dinosaur problem already appears to have made progress at the beginning of the movie, with Owen rounding up parasaurs in the Sierra Nevada mountains, and construction workers leading an apatosaur to safety.

So, where can we go from here? Well, it's entirely possible that we won't be going anywhere, because Jurassic World: Dominion is being marketed as the final movie in the Jurassic franchise.

But considering the bait-and-switch nature of all the marketing for the movie, why should we believe Universal Studios? And given the very nature of such franchises these days, it's highly unlikely this is the end anyway.

Producer Frank Marshall has previously gone on record to suggest that this isn't the final movie in the series, saying:

“I think Dominion’s going to wrap up this trilogy, but we’re not resting on our laurels. We’re going to sit down, and we’re going to see what the future is. We have that wonderful series, Camp Cretaceous, on Netflix. We obviously want to make quality, good movies with great storytelling, great writers and directors, but we’re definitely looking to do more in the Jurassic world.”

Chris Pratt, however, more recently suggested the opposite. In an interview on the Today show, he told host Savannah Guthrie:

"I really do think it's the end, yeah. You got the legacy cast back — Sam Neill, Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum -- plus the cast of Jurassic World, all our storylines converging in a way that is very much a finale." The actor went on to say, "Thirty years in the making -- this is the sixth Jurassic film, and it's the end of this franchise."

So it remains to be seen whether or not Jurassic World: Dominion is actually the end of the Jurassic Park/Jurassic World franchise. Who knows what might be in store for this hugely popular series.

Is it possible we'll get a live-action TV series, once animated show Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous is out of the way following its fifth and final season this summer? Here's to hoping!

Or maybe Jurassic Park/Jurassic World will one day get the Star Wars treatment and have its own prequel trilogy, which is perhaps the best direction for the series now that it's written itself into a bit of a corner.
