What is Netflix's Dead Boy Detectives About?
Dead Boy Detectives follows original DC Comics characters, Edwin Payne (George Rexstrew) and Charles Rowland (Jayden Revri), the teenage detectives responsible for establishing the Dead Boy Detectives agency.
Edwin and Charles are ghost best friends whose birthdays are decades apart. Oh, and they solve supernatural mysteries together! This includes escaping evil witches, hell, and Death (Kirby Howell-Baptiste) herself.
The duo is also helped by their friends, Crystal (Kassius Nelson) and her friend Niko (Yuyu Kitamura) who crack some of the paranormal cases, more of which we'll get to see once the TV show debuts on the streamer.
However, one thing that lingers in fans' minds is whether the Dead Boy Detectives series is canonically an LGBT story or not, especially after seeing a glimpse of Edwin cozying up with a male love interest.
What is the Dead Boy Detectives Series Based On? LGBT Canon Story Explored
The upcoming Netflix series is officially a spin-off from the 2019 HBO series, Doom Patrol, and is connected to The Sandman Universe and the DC Universe.
Considering that Doom Patrol and The Sandman both prominently include LGBT themes and characters, a lingering question arises with fans: does Netflix's Dead Boy Detectives have a canon LGBT story?
Written by Good Omens and The Sandman creator, Neil Gaiman's live adaptations thus far have almost always had LGBT representation in his characters, but does this mean Dead Boy Detectives will, too?
In the original comic books of the same name, Edwin has been hinted at taking an interest in Charles, but it hasn't been fully confirmed.
That is until the official trailer for the Netflix series teased Edwin and Thomas the Cat King (Lukas Gage) nearly kissing in one of the episodes.

Neil Gaiman on Including LGBT Representation in His Works
Neil Gaiman has yet to address the LGBT element in Dead Boy Detectives.
However, in a 2022 interview, when Neil Gaiman's The Sandman reached the pinnacle of popularity, he noticed that some of the show's fans had pointed out why putting in LGBT characters is important to the story.
"I'd put all of the LGBT people in there because they were my friends and I wanted The Sandman to reflect the world that I lived in," Gaiman explained, "And if I hadn't, it would've been untrue to my world. I wanted it to be about people and everybody seemed to respond to that."

Meanwhile, Dead Boy Detectives episodes debut on Netflix on April 25.
