Keke Palmer stars as Alice, an enslaved woman in Georgia who believes it is still the 19th century. When she manages to escape, she discovers that it is actually 1973 and that slavery has long been abolished. Adding to that discovery, Alice learns that the Black Power movement is taking place.

In her escape, Alice comes across a truck driver named Frank (played by Common), who helps her become accustomed to the current situation. He also agrees to help Alice get revenge on Paul Bennett (played by Jonny Lee Miller), her former plantation owner.

Is Alice Based On A True Story?

The film is inspired by true events based on the experience of Black Americans who continued to be enslaved even after the Emancipation Proclamation. The law took years to spread since there were many slave owners who refused to comply to it.

One such example is the case of Mae Louise Walls Miller, who continued to be a slave until 1963. This is a huge shock since it's been 100 years since the proclamation was issued. Miller's father signed a contract he could not read, which turned him and his entire family into slaves. The family were tied to the land and did not know what was happening in the outside world. Mae managed to escape at the age of 14 and got the help of a family who rescued her other family members that night.

The film is loosely based on Mae's story, except there are some changes in place. The big change adapted in the film is that the setting is 1973 instead of 1963. Also, Alice seeks revenge against her master after taking inspiration from the film Coffy.
