Despite the constant backlash Hollywood faces for utilizing Artificial Intelligence in producing content, a new development in the House of Mouse raised concern. Is AI truly taking over Disney? Here's what you need to know.
Is AI Taking Over Disney? Recent Report Details Company's Major AI Initiative
According to a recent report from The Wrap, the Walt Disney Co. is preparing to launch a "transformative AI program" to transform the creative output, primarily its post-production and visual effects.
Although details remain under wraps, an anonymous insider at Disney said that the AI initiative movement will involve "hundreds" of people at the company that would also involve parks and experiences, but not customer-facing.
A Disney spokesman declined to comment on the story.
However, the insider also said that it was "too early" to declare when Walt Disney plans on announcing to confirm the circulating news.
"Disney has always leaned into technology partnerships," LightShed Ventures analyst Rich Greenfield told The Wrap, "It makes a tremendous amount of sense that Disney is heavily focused on this, but also putting substantial resources behind it."
Has Disney forgotten the backlash they faced for using AI-generated images in the opening sequence of Marvel's Secret Invasion last year?
While the message holds true that none of the humans seem trustworthy (not even the heroes), surely, authentic art pieces would've delivered the same theme, as fans pointed out.
What Disney CEO Bob Iger Previously Said About AI
Previously speaking at the Canva Create showcase at the SoFi Stadium and Hollywood Park, Disney CEO Bob Iger 'commended Canva for embracing the potential of generative AI tools.'
"Walt Disney himself was a big believer in using technology in the early days to tell better stories. And he thought that technology in the hands of a great storyteller was unbelievably powerful," Iger said during the Canva Create showcase in May.
"You're never going to get in the way of it," he added, "There isn't a generation of human beings that has ever been able to stand the way of technological advancement. What we try to do is embrace the change that technology has created."
While the insider says it is still too early to see whether Disney plans on making AI an official part of their workforce, Disney is definitely making a major turn of things around their production soon.
