Invincible Season 1 Ending Explained

With a near-perfect score on Amazon Prime and IMDb, Invincible is arguably one of the most popular animated superheroes works out there. The first season concluded last week at 8 episodes, and it definitely left a gap, which will only be filled by Seasons 2 and 3—thankfully, they've already been announced! The ending of Season 1 had Invincible trending on social media, and for good reason. So let's unpack what happened.

Warning: If you haven't caught up with Invincible, we highly recommend doing so, unless you like spoilers.

Invincible, which is based on Robert Kirkman's comic of the same name, follows 17-year-old Mark Grayson, son of Omni-Man, the most powerful superhero in the world. When Mark starts developing powers of his own, becoming the superhero "Invincible," he has to depend on his father for guidance—until things turn sour and he realizes his father's legacy isn't noble as he thought.

Already from Episode 1, there have been hints of Omni-Man's sinister intentions but he only reveals those to the world in Episode 7. Rather than saving Earth, Omni-Man intends to make it weak enough for an alien race known as Viltrumites to take over. His villainy becomes clear to all the world when he kills The Immortal live on tv.

As of Episode 8, Omni-Man left Earth, after a bloody fight with his son, which Mark barely survived. After recovering, Mark is ready to resume his duties as Invincible, despite the trauma he's undergone. But what happens from here?

At this point, it's hard to tell. This will largely depend on whether the show will choose to remain faithful to the source material or take a new direction. As far as the comic is concerned, Omni-Man gets the chance to at least think of what he has done—not that anything can really redeem him.

In the comic, Omni-Man ends up on another planet, where, much like on Earth, he gets together with a local woman and has a son. We won't spoil any more for now, but he might still get a chance at redemption. For better or worse, this was probably not his last time on Earth.

Did The Immortal Really Die?

To say that The Immortal died is a bit of an oxymoron, at least linguistically. Besides, the show has already dropped hints that he might live once more. His powers allow him to resurrect as long as all of his body parts are somehow put back together, and last time we saw him he was undergoing an operation to do just that, so there's hope that he will still fight in the next Seasons. It remains to be seen if he'll also be killed by Omni-Man once more.

In Episode 8, Mark met with Allen the Alien to discuss the future. While he has a lot to process, he still wants to fight under the alias of Invincible and protect the Earth. But he's still a teenager, so graduating high school and going to university are also on the cards. As of Invincible Season 1 Episode 8, he got back with Amber, who had left him because he hadn't entrusted her with the truth. This means that another important relationship from the comic will happen later, if at all.

School, normal life and superhero career are definitely a bit too much for one person to handle, so we're curious to see how he will manage it all.
