Insomniacs After School has a new promotional project, but it’s not just about the anime. Instead, this new Insomniacs After School collab promotes its setting in Nanao City with a special train that’s inspired by the show.
This new promotion was launched last April 29 with a special event that featured a ribbon-cutting ceremony that was attended by Mamiko Noto, the voice actress of Usako Kurashiki in the anime.
With this promotion, the anime aims to drive interest in the small city of Nanao, similar to other anime that put the spotlight on lesser-known places in Japan.
Insomniacs After School’s Unique Setting
Insomniacs After School is one of the new high school romance anime of Spring 2023.
Instead of being a laugh-out-loud comedy though, this show has a chill atmosphere that promises a relaxing watch.
As its title implies, the show follows two high school students who suffer from insomnia.
They find solace in their school’s old astronomical observatory. And soon, they reform the school’s astronomy club.
Aside from its unique story, the show is also significant as it is set in Nanao, a small city in Ishikawa Prefecture which is on the other side of Japan from Tokyo.
While most high school anime are set in Tokyo, Insomniacs After School is different as it is set in a city with a population of less than 50,000. Though this definitely adds to the anime’s quiet and relaxing atmosphere.
In a way, this is similar to other anime that are also set in lesser-known areas in Japan.
For instance, there’s Suzume which begins in Miyazaki City in Southern Kyushu. There’s also A Whisker Away which is set in Tokoname City in Aichi.

Insomniacs After School Launches Special Themed Train Service
To promote both the anime and tourism in Nanao City, several train sets of the Noto Railway in Nanao City were given Insomniacs After School-themed wraps outside and standees of Isaki and Ganta inside.
During the collab’s launch, voice actress Mamiko Noto was present for the ribbon-cutting ceremony.
She also shared how nice the train was as it gives riders a nice view of the beautiful rural scenery in Nanao.
This isn’t the first time that an anime has collaborated with a train company though as this is quite common in Japan.
There are even some international examples such as the Demon Slayer trains in LA last year.
