As part of the Insomniacs After School promotion, the voice actors and staff had an interview with Comic Natalie. There, one of the VAs revealed that they struggled with insomnia as a child, much like Ganta Nakami in Insomniacs After School.

This series may not have as much hype as big Spring 23 anime like Demon Slayer or Oshi no Ko, but it’s a quietly good series that’s relaxing to watch, making it a nice counterpoint to the more intense shows of the season.

Insomniacs After School VAs and Staff Explain the Show’s Appeal

In the interview, Ganta and Isaki VAs Gen Sato and Konomi Tamura shared what they think the primary appeal of the series is.

They were also joined by series creator Makoto Ojiro and director Yuuki Ikeda.

While this romance anime's primary hook is about two high school students growing closer as they try and deal with their insomnia, the show also puts the spotlight on photography.

Both Sato and Tamura referenced the show’s focus on astrophotography, which is the hobby of the main character, Ganta.

Ganta’s photography hobby fits well with the show’s vibe given that you can only capture photos of stars at night. This adds to the cozy vibe of the show.

Along with this, series creator Ojiro also said that the series’ overall theme is capturing people's moments, which is reflected in the photography and the overall atmosphere of the show.

Of course, insomnia is also another important theme, and it’s one that resonated deeply with Sato.

During the interview, Sato revealed that he was a big fan of the Insomniacs After School manga even before the anime’s production was announced.

He explained that he suffered from insomnia as a kid and that upon reading the manga, he felt that he had found a friend that knew what he went through.

Sato further explained how he related to Ganta’s frustration. He also recommended the anime for others who suffer from insomnia so that they hopefully get the same comfort that he did from it.

In response, creator Ojiro thanked him for his kind words, saying that he doesn’t often receive direct compliments like this.

If you haven’t started it yet, new episodes of Insomniacs After School are released every week.
