- Quick Answer: Dragged down by mixed reviews and a soft $38 million domestic debut, Supergirl is projected to lose $125 million against its hefty $315 million breakeven target.
Following its disappointing box office opening, Supergirl is now projected to lose millions of dollars by the end of its theatrical run.
Before its release, the new DCU movie was already receiving mixed reviews from critics and was forecast to have a tepid box office opening, which is seen as a bad sign for the franchise and the opposite of Superman's massive success last year. Now that the numbers are out, there are questions about what it all means for the DCU moving forward.
How Much Money Is Supergirl Projected to Lose at the Box Office?

According to Deadline, industry sources believe Supergirl is estimated to lose around $125 million following its disappointing box office opening.
So far, the film has already grossed $68 million worldwide (including the $37 million domestic opening). It reportedly has a production budget of around $170-186 million and $120 million on marketing (P&A).
The breakeven is estimated at around $315 million for the film to be considered a solid success at the box office. However, with the numbers so far and the likelihood that it won't have strong legs on the rest of its theatrical run, it is not expected to reach that point in the coming weeks.
This is a disappointment, considering that it's the second theatrical release from DCU and some fans are already concerned about the franchise's future as a result. It also shot down the possibility of seeing Kara Zor-El in another solo movie anytime soon.
So, what does it mean for the future of the DCU moving forward? For now, it won't change any plans that DC Studios has for the franchise, and there is no intention to reorganize their slate as a result.
DC Studios co-chairman Peter Safran said in a statement: "While Supergirl didn’t meet our box office expectations, it’s just one component of a broader, long-term strategy at DC Studios that we remain confident in."
A report from TheWrap suggested that the Bane and Deathstroke movie project has been considered a priority for DC Studios, amidst the box office failure of Supergirl.
Meanwhile, Milly Alcock's Kara Zor-El will be seen again next year in the Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow, where she will be a supporting character.
What is DCU's Supergirl About?
In Supergirl, when an unexpected and ruthless adversary strikes too close to home, Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl, reluctantly joins forces with an unlikely companion on an epic, interstellar journey of vengeance and justice.
The main cast includes Milly Alcock, Matthias Schoenaerts, Eve Ridley, David Krumholtz, Emily Beecham, David Corenswet, and Jason Momoa. DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran are producing the film while Craig Gillespie directs.
The film is now showing in theaters worldwide.
