Katsuhiro Otomo's Akira is an animated classic, and the movie is set to re-release with a 4K remaster this year. The film was meant to come out in April, and we have a new poster featuring protagonist Shotaro Kaneda.
Check it out:
While the original poster with Kaneda walking to his bike remains iconic, I like this new imagery, and it really evokes the style of the film. I guess it's also timely that they should re-release the movie, what with the live-action film coming along. Hopefully, Taika Waititi gets working on it sooner rather than later.
Akira was set to re-release in April, but seeing as how the Coronavirus has shut down movie theaters indefinitely, it's very likely that this film won't hit its April release date. For now, everyone is hoping that things go back to normal by June—and that's already being optimistic.
In 1988 the Japanese government drops an atomic bomb on Tokyo after ESP experiments on children go awry. In 2019, 31 years after the nuking of the city, Kaneda, a bike gang leader, tries to save his friend Tetsuo from a secret government project. He battles anti-government activists, greedy politicians, irresponsible scientists, and a powerful military leader until Tetsuo's supernatural powers suddenly manifest. A final battle is fought in Tokyo Olympiad exposing the experiment's secrets.
Akira is set for a re-release on April 4, but it's possible that it could be delayed. Best keep yourself posted for any updates.
