Did Akira Predict the Coronavirus Outbreak?

Akira is considered by many to be a pop culture phenomenon, proving that anime isn't just a lazily made cartoon for kids but a gorgeously drawn epic for adults. The movie is still viewed by many as a classic and is set to be remade by Thor: Love and Thunder director Taika Waititi, though that has been delayed. It looks like Akira was ahead of its time in many ways as the anime's fans feel that it may have predicted the Coronavirus.

Hear us out.

On Twitter, fans have noticed some similar imagery from Coronavirus protests and certain scenes from Akira. It's actually pretty shocking since the anime movie is also set in 2020 and there was no way the original creators were going to predict this. Granted, this is a cyberpunk movie set in the future where the apocalypse is about to happen and lethal diseases are a common part of that setting, along with protests.

While it might be a bit presumptuous to assume Akira predicted this worldwide epidemic, the fact that the images are so similar just can't be denied. This has happened a number of times in the media before, with The Simpsons predicting Donald Trump as president, Family Guy calling Bruce Jenner, now Kaitlyn Jenner, a woman years before she came out, and Godzilla (1998) somehow guessing a tragic event with the World Trade Center.

Entertainment is weird you guys.

Akira is now available on Blu-Ray and DVD.
