Iconic Star Wars Costume Designer Passes Away

When Star Wars first debuted in 1977, viewers were blown away by the film, thanks to a fairly original plot and setting. The movie had some of the most striking visuals seen at the time and some of the costumes were amazing, particularly the iconic design of Darth Vader. Fans have John Mollo to thank for that, who sadly passed away recently, according to The Times UK.

Mollo was 86 when he passed away earlier this week, though the details on his passing haven't been revealed. Still, he leaves a long and lasting legacy with his costume design in the Star Wars franchise. He also worked with the legendary Stanley Kubrick on Barry Lyndon, where he assisted in costume design. Soon after, he was recommended for Lucas' space epic and the rest is history.

Apparently, Mollo only had a $90,000 budget for the film's costumes, but that didn't stop him from doing good work. Everything from the Storm Troopers to Darth Vader and a number of aliens from the memorable Mos Eisley Cantina, where Luke Skywalker eventually ran into Han Solo. His hard work paid off, as Mollo won the Academy Award for best costume designer that year.

John wasn't done with Star Wars yet, as he later worked on its sequel The Empire Strikes Back. The Academy Award winner also worked on Alien and Outland, showing that he specialized in science fiction.

It's clear that Mollo's legacy will live on, now that Star Wars will be continuing from here on out. Star Wars: The Last Jedi hits theaters on December 15.
