Hunger Games Star On Why She Turned Down Black Panther Role

Black Panther is not only a box-office success but many are claiming it to be the best film in the MCU. One of the most praised aspects of the film has been the cast, which is mostly Africans and African-Americans. Turns out that Hunger Games star Amandla Stenberg was almost a part of the film and she actually backed out because of her skin color.

Stenberg told CBC Arts that she was very close to signing on to the film but felt that it wasn't right since most of the cast had dark skin and she is biracial. The actress said that it wouldn't have been right, being an American with a Nigerian accent pretending to be the same color as the rest of the cast.

"One of the most challenging things for me to do was to walk away from Black Panther. I got really, really close and they were like, 'do you want to continue fighting for this?' And I was like, this isn't right. These are all dark skin actors playing Africans and I feel like it would have just been off to see m as a bi-racial American with a Nigerian accent just pretending that I'm the same colour as everyone else in the movie."

While she considered it a challenging decision to make, Stenberg has no regrets turning down the role. Considering how everyone praised the film for its dark-skinned cast, it looks like she made the right choice.

Black Panther is showing in theaters now.
