How The Ending of Avengers: Infinity War Pays Tribute to Infinity Gauntlet

Anyone who's been keeping up with the MCU knows that Avengers: Infinity War is partially based on The Infinity Gauntlet, an epic six-issue mini-series that pitted the heroes of Marvel against Thanos. While Infinity War is its sequel, the film seems to pay more homages to Infinity Gauntlet, especially when it comes to the shocking ending.

WARNING: SPOILERS FOR AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR

Thanos has succeeded in getting the six Infinity Stones and with a snap of his fingers, half of the universe has been erased. This includes a number of popular Marvel characters like Star-Lord, Groot, Bucky/White Wolf/Winter Soldier, Falcon, Black Panther, and the saddest of all, Spider-Man. It was a truly shocking moment that no one saw coming.

Now that fans are waiting for the still-unnamed Avengers 4 and Captain Marvel (sorry Ant-Man and Wasp), they might be curious about Thanos' snapping fingers and if that action appeared in the comics. The answer to that a surprising yes and is actually very ironic in terms of chronology.

In Jim Starlin's Infinity Gauntlet mini-series, Thanos snaps his fingers with a fully-powered Infinity Gauntlet to wipe out half of the universe. Unlike the film where he does it for balance, comic book Thanos does it to please his mistress Death, who actually wants balance back in the universe.

Funnily enough, this isn't the end of the story or the middle, but the beginning. Thanos snaps his fingers in the first issue after wondering why Death was displeased with him. As if that wasn't ironic enough, Spider-Man is one of the first heroes who notices the disappearances and is not one of the many casualties.

Since the heroes ended up being victorious in the end, we can only hope that the same thing happens in the unnamed Avengers 4, which comes out on May 3, 2019. Avengers: Infinity War is now showing in theaters. The Infinity Gauntlet is available now in comic stores, bookstores, and digital reading outlets.
