  • Primary Subject: Spider-Noir
  • Key Update: The series takes place in a standalone 1930s alternate universe separate from the MCU, though it subtly nods to broader multiverse awareness.
  • Status: Confirmed

  • Quick Answer: Spider-Noir is not canon to the MCU or the animated Spider-Verse; it is a standalone Sony series set in its own distinct 1930s universe.

Spider-Noir may take place in an entirely distinct, alternate universe from the MCU, but it quietly continues Spider-Man: No Way Home’s multiverse setup.

The new Prime Video series is part of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, with No Way Home being the biggest event to feature the multiverse theme.

So, how did Spider-Noir come about, and is it connected to the MCU?

Compared to Spider-Man: No Way Home, which brings in Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s versions of Spider-Man, along with other villains from across the franchise, Spider-Noir doesn’t feature characters from different universes or depict any interdimensional travel.

However, it does suggest that “The Spider” has more experience with the concept of the multiverse than fans might initially expect.

In fact, early in the series, a montage of major events in The Spider’s life is shown, with Ben Reilly (Nicolas Cage) saying, “Someone once asked me what universe this was; a strange question that stuck with me all these years later.”

While he later confirms that it is the only universe he has ever known, suggesting he has not directly experienced the multiverse, it still raises the possibility that another Spider-Man variant or Marvel character may have traveled through the Spider-Noir universe at some point.

Since the show keeps its story contained within its standalone, grounded, street-level world and features known Spider-Man villains like Sandman, it is not far-fetched to think such events could have happened off-screen prior to the series.

Spider-Noir

While fans have seen Spider-Man Noir before in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Spider-Noir is not canon to either the MCU or the Spider-Verse.

The show has no direct connection to either franchise, as it takes place in an entirely different universe set in the 1930s.

“It’s not a continuation of Into the Spider-Verse. Once Phil and Chris introduced the idea of the multiverse, I think you’re allowed to take things and make them your own,” the showrunner, Oren Uziel, told Empire.

Spider-Noir is part of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, which is separate from Marvel Studios’ MCU. Fans may have assumed the noir series is connected to the wider Spider-Man universe after Spider-Man: No Way Home introduced the concept of the multiverse, but there is no confirmation that Spider-Noir is canon to the MCU.

So while the show is not MCU-connected in canon, it exists within the broader Spider-Man multiverse concept that Sony is building.

Spider-Noir is now streaming on Prime Video.
