Meghan Markle has been in the spotlight since she started her acting career. She’s best known for her role as Rachel Zane in the hit legal drama Suits before tying the knot with Prince Harry. But as she was about to marry a prince and become a full-time royal, how did she leave the show?

During its first season, Meghan joined the show in 2011 and appeared in 108 episodes. But after her relationship with Prince Harry blossomed, resulting in a royal engagement and a wedding later, the actress had to leave the show and the entertainment world in general.

The 41-year-old last appeared on the show on its seventh season finale, aired on April 25, 2019, less than a month before her royal wedding on May 19 of the same year.

So, did she give up her acting to be with Prince Harry at the time?

“I don’t see it as giving anything up. I just see it as a change,” she said in a joint interview, per Edinburgh News. “Now it’s time to work with Harry as a team.”

Under her royal commitments at the time, the Duchess of Sussex has to do a number of charitable causes and support different organizations, from animal welfare to helping women to arts and education.

The Preparations for Meghan Markle’s Departure

Alternatively, the show’s creator Aaron Korsh revealed that the writers were already preparing for her exit at the time as her relationship with the Duke of Sussex grew, resulting in her increasing media exposure.

“I sort of had a decision to make because I didn't want to intrude and ask her, ‘Hey, what's going on? What are you going to do?’ he told Radio 4.

“So, collectively, the writers, we decided to take a gamble that these two people [Meghan and Harry] are in love, and it's going to work out,” he continued. “What we decided to do was as the season progresses say, ‘Look, I would rather have good things happen to Meghan in her life' — which would likely mean her leaving the show.”

Hence, they planned on her departure, thinking it was much easier to undo, rather than having her stay on the series and later find out she would leave.

How Meghan Markle Bid Her Farewell on Suits

In the two-hour Season 7 finale, Meghan officially bid her farewell on the show.

At the time, her character, Rachel Zane, tied the knot with her on-screen partner, Mike Ross (Patrick J. Adams), who also left the series at the same time.

It marked their last episode together after accepting an offer to run a firm in Seattle.

“If we’re ever going to do something like this in our lives, now’s the time,” Rachel told Mike in the finale about making a move from New York to Seattle.
