After its release on Netflix last March 23, 2023, The Night Agent has skyrocketed to the number one spot of top shows. The show is the latest political drama to be released, which follows the story of an FBI agent named Peter Sutherland (played by Gabriel Basso).

The story of The Night Agent was adapted from Matthew Quirk's novel, The Night Agent: A Novel. Shawn Ryan is credited as the writer behind the TV adaptation, which means he has a busy time ahead if the show gets renewed for a second season. But are there enough books that he can use as a source material for the show? Here's what you need to know.

The writer behind the political drama, Matthew Quirk, has published a total of seven books. Unfortunately, The Night Agent is credited as a standalone book. His other books may involve the same nature as The Night Agent, but they follow a different character.

It's possible that if the show gets renewed for a second season, the writer of the show could adapt the other books written by Quirk. His books include:

  • The 500 (2012)
  • The Directive (2014)
  • Cold Barrel Zero (2016)
  • Dead Man Switch (2017)
  • The Night Agent (2019)
  • Hour of the Assassin (2020)
  • Red Warning (20233)

Quirk's eight book, entitled Inside Threat, will be released on June 13, 2023.

At this point, it's too early to determine if a second season will be on the cards for The Night Agent. But if the show gets picked up by Netflix for a season 2, showrunner Shawn Ryan told Deadline that it will be when he (along with the other writers) will start "figuring out" the story.

“I certainly have some ideas; I probably want to keep those to myself until the time comes."
“What I will tell you is that the initial pitch for this show that we sold to Netflix was that each season would tell its own, mostly self-enclosed, a beginning, middle and end story, and any future seasons would include a few but not most of the characters that we saw in the previous season."

Since there is no direct source material that can be used from Quirk's line of work, this means that the writers of the show will have to use their imaginations on how to continue with the show's story.

But this shouldn't be too hard since the show is very different from Quirk's book. For starters, the show has omitted the idea of Russia being the villain in the story. The show has also removed the major subplot in the series, which makes it easier for the writers to continue the show for a succeeding season.

So if The Night Agent gets renewed for a second season, the writers will be able to come up with their own idea for the story based on the characters that Quirk created.

The Night Agent is currently streaming on Netflix.
