How Did Jake's Wife Die in Falling for Christmas?

Falling for Christmas is a Netflix Holiday original starring Lindsay Lohan and Chord Overstreet.

Lohan plays Sierra Belmont, a wealthy hotel heiress who can do no evil in her father’s eyes. She is not necessarily a mean person, but she starts off as a self-centered person who only cares about her comfort, her relationship with her influencer boyfriend Tad, and how she can avoid disappointing her dad.

In the movie, Tad (Sierra’s boyfriend) proposes to her on top of a restricted snowy mountain. When the strong winds of fate blow over them, Sierra skis down the side of the mountain and lands at the foot, where Jake Russel, a widower who is the owner of a small bed and breakfast called the North Star Lodge, finds her.

Jake takes a generally uninjured Sierra to the hospital but soon finds out she’s suffering from amnesia. Sierra, now temporarily called Sarah, stays with Jake and his family, comprised of his daughter Avy and mother-in-law Alejandra.

The Russel family does everything they can to make Sierra’s stay with them comfortable and help her remember her past. Through shared moments, consistently supporting each other, and an undeniable attraction, Jake and Sierra eventually fall for each other. But when Sierra’s memory returns, she returns as a changed woman to a life that no longer fits her.

Sierra breaks up with her boyfriend, Tad (who gets together with her assistant), and falls into the arms of her love, Jake.

Who was Jake’s Wife, and How Did She Die?

Before he met Sierra, Jake was married to Alejandra’s daughter Carla.

Jake and Carla had a daughter named Avy. The North Star Lodge belonged to Carla’s family for many generations before Carla’s father gave the Lodge to the couple when they married.

After living a happy life in the Lodge, Carla passed away due to an unspecified illness two Christmases ago.

This greatly affected the family, who each handled the loss in their own way.

Avy wants her dad to find someone new to love, so she writes a wish on a card and hangs it on the Wishing Tree in hopes that Jake will find love again. As the Christmas winds blow the card away, the same winds whisk Sierra their way.
