House of the Dragon Season 2 Still Filming Despite WGA Strike

The members of the Writers Guild of America (WGA) have begun a strike on May 2, Tuesday, which ceases their work in Hollywood until major companies increase their job security and fair compensation.

It goes without saying that no writers for Hollywood means no good TV shows and films are getting their worth without their involvement in the process.

However, in spite of this, House of the Dragon Season 2 is still set to continue filming.

Variety reports that filming started in April, with a source telling the news outlet that Season 2 scripts have been complete “for some time.”

While this certainly secures House of the Dragon Season 2’s release in 2024, it remains to be seen how rewrites on the screenplay could be addressed without the original writers present.

It is worth noting though that House of the Dragon Season 3 was greenlit ahead of Season 2, which could potentially mean HBO already planned the series ahead of the WGA strike.

An HBO spokesperson even confirmed that Season 2 runs with only 8 episodes (2 episodes short from its previous season).

This may seem like good news for the series, but fans should expect a decline in quality without the help of the show’s writers. After all, they run the show, too.

Of course, there’s the consideration that House of the Dragon is based on George RR Martin’s novel, Fire & Blood, giving its showrunners some reference to work on.

Should the WGA strike go longer than its initial intended deadline, this could negatively impact Hollywood films and TV, especially since the last time the guild went on strike was back in 2007.

The 2007 strike may have lasted for only 3 months, but with plenty of remakes, adaptations, sequels, and prequels already in the making, 3 months (or more) is too long a time.

House of the Dragon Season 2 is expected to premiere sometime in 2024.
