As House of the Dragon Season 2 begins production, ahead of its second season release, an HBO spokesperson has reportedly confirmed that House of the Dragon Season 3 has been greenlit!
House of the Dragon Season 2 has yet to premiere on the streaming service, and yet a third season may already be in talks. According to Deadline, the creative team had initially envisioned that the Game of Thrones prequel would run for three or four seasons.
The news outlet also reports that executive producer-showrunner Ryan Condal (who had been working with author/executive producer George RR. Martin) wants to break down Martin’s Fire & Blood (the “big-picture view” of the series) stories season-to-season, which could explain another thing on what we’re expecting on House of the Dragon Season 2.

A third season of the Game of Thrones prequel series shouldn’t come to a shock to its audiences, but receiving a green light ahead of House of the Dragon Season 2 is a huge deal. Not only does this show how House of the Dragon Season 3 is already mapped out, as confirmed by Deadline, but may also explain the reason behind shortening Season 2 in the first place.
See, the first season contained a total of 10 episodes. However, House of the Dragon Season 2 has only received 8, short of 2 more episodes as compared to its previous season.
While HBO has yet to address the sudden cut of episodes, with a greenlit Season 3 already in talks as of writing, this could explain the reason behind it. After all, even Game of Thrones is no stranger when it comes to the episode count. While Game of Thrones ran for 10 episodes for Seasons 1 to 6, Season 7 only had 7 episodes, with Season 8 at its shortest (6 episodes).
