House of the Dragon Gets Negative Reviews for Having 'Too Many Targaryens'

House of the Dragon is already set to premiere this weekend and early reviews are finally here. So what are people saying about the Game of Thrones prequel? Not surprisingly, the new HBO series is already getting a lot of great feedback. However, there are also some negative reviews claiming that the show has "too many Targaryens."

When House of the Dragon was first announced back in 2019, George R.R. Martin had confirmed that the series will be an adaptation of his novel Fire and Blood. Later on, it was further announced that the spin-off show will take place 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones and follow the reign of King Viserys I Targaryen before leading to the Targaryen civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons.

Basically, it was already confirmed that House of the Dragon will be about House Targaryen and this is evidenced in the show's title. Still, some people have given the series negative reviews because there are "too many Targaryens" and there are "lots of people with platinum hair." Moreover, a few reviews point out that the characters' names are too similar (e.g. Rhaenyra and Rhaenys).

It's a strange thing to complain about considering that the series is about the Targaryens. Still, it's best to remember that there are other major Houses that will eventually appear in the HBO show. Some of these Houses will even be connected to characters who have already appeared in Game of Thrones. Stay tuned for more updates on this story.

House of the Dragon will star Paddy Considine, Emma D'Arcy, Olivia Cooke, and Matt Smith. The series will premiere on HBO with the first episode titled The Heirs of the Dragon on August 21, 2022.
