House of the Dragon: Aemond Claiming Vhagar was a Huge Blow to Rhaenyra Targaryen

House of the Dragon is finally taking big steps towards the fiery civil war that will tear the Targaryens apart. Interestingly, Episode 7 showed us a truly huge one as Aemond Targaryen claimed Vhagar, ensuring that the largest and oldest dragon alive will be flying for the Greens. And while this is great for the Greens, it could mean trouble for Rhaenyra Targaryen.

House of the Dragon: Why Did Aemond Claim Vhagar?

We already know that Aemond Targaryen is desperate to have a dragon. In Episode 6, he foolishly tried to claim Dreamfyre but the dragon made it clear she didn't want him for his rider. So it's no surprise that he immediately attempted to claim Vhagar and we'll just have to understand that a boy's desperation for a dragon was more important than respecting the fact that he is attending its rider's funeral.

But was it also a calculated move? Aemond clearly wanted to claim Vhagar because the dragon is an important one for being the largest and most experienced in wars. Although he may not have realized it then, Vhagar being claimed by Aemond would turn out to be a major blow to Rhaenyra Targaryen in the future.

Since Vhagar is now on the Greens side, that leaves the Blacks with one less dragon and dragonrider. In addition to that, Aemond is set to do some major damage to the Blacks with the help of the dragon. With that in mind, Vhagar allowing herself to be claimed by Aemond could turn the tides for the Greens.

House of the Dragon Episode 7 is now available on HBO Max. House of the Dragon Episode 8 is titled The Lord of the Tides and will premiere on HBO on Sunday, October 9, 2022.
