Who is Holden in True Detective Season 4?
True Detective: Night Country first introduced us to a grumpy police chief named Liz Danvers, who seemed to have no family except for Leah (played by Isabella LaBlanc), whom she is entrusted to as a legal guardian.
Despite the absence of a family, Liz has sexual relationships with two men: Captain Ted Connolly and a high school teacher named Adam Bryce.
As the show progresses, we start to see Liz having flashbacks of a small boy whom she was close to. It was later revealed that this boy was her son, named Holden. So who is Holden from True Detective Season 4?
It turns out that years ago, Liz had a family of her own. She was in a complicated relationship with Jake Peterson (played by Svend Hardenberg). Jake is also the biological father of Leah. The two had a biological son together, whom they named Holden (played by Inuik Lee Nielsen Shapiro).

What Happened to Holden in True Detective Season 4? Here's What We Know About So Far
Since Holden seems to appear only in Liz's flashbacks, we can only presume that he could either be dead or missing for a few years. And since Liz is taking care of Jake's biological daughter, it can be presumed that Jake has already died.
Although tidbits of information on Holden are being released every episode, we can't fully conclude that he is dead. But the show has been making its viewers come up with this conclusion.
For starters, in the first episode, a creepy child's hand was seen reaching for Liz. There was also that "She's awake" line being said.
In another scene, Captain Connelly tells Liz how good of a cop she was before "the thing" happened. This seems to point us to a particular incident that Liz tries to avoid talking about, even with Leah.
In Episode 3, Evangeline Navarro (played by Kali Reis) was chasing a child in the ice fields when she slipped and hit her head. This led her to an accident scene with an overturned truck.
Before Navarro's vision ends, a small child carrying a stuffed polar bear reaches for her shoulder. In the next episode, Navarro sees the same toy at Liz's house.
From what we can presume at this point, Holden and Jake met in an accident years ago. It's possible that they were the victims in the vision of the overturned truck scene that Navarro saw.
We'll have to wait for further episodes to know what happened to Holden.
