Here’s Why Rey Turns To The Dark Side In Star Wars: Episode IX

Lucasfilm released a new trailer for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker today, and while the video didn't feature that many clips for the actual film, it did manage to get fans super hyped for the final installment in Star Wars sequel trilogy.

Not only did we get to see Rey (Daisy Ridley), Finn (John Boyega), and Poe (Oscar Isaac) make their way to what seems like a new desert planet, but we also got to see Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) trading lightsaber blows with Rey. More importantly, we also get to see a shot teasing Rey's turn to the Dark Side.

It's a pretty interesting scene. Rey has on a hood and she's wielding a saber that flips over and turns into a weapon reminiscent of Maul's double-bladed lightsaber in the prequels. While fans are taking this as a sign of Rey's eventual turn to the Dark Side, Forbes speculates that the Star Wars sequel trilogy heroine won't really defect from the Light. Instead, the publication's writer believes that one of the most likely reasons why we'll get to see Rey dressed more like a Sith is that it's going to be used in a dream sequence in the film. Or more likely, a Force vision that forces Rey to confront her inner demons.

Still, we're certain that this Dark Side Rey is going to be great for Lucasfilm's merchandising – it'll make for pretty great figures and for Star Wars videogames.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is scheduled to hit cinemas on December 20, 2019.
