Here’s Why Infinity War Doesn’t Have Any Sherlock Jokes

Benedict Cumberbatch and Robert Downey Jr. aren't just Marvel stars, they've also both played different versions of Sherlock Holmes at different points in time. The Doctor Strange star played the British detective for BBC's popular Sherlock series and the Iron Man actor put on the cap for the Sherlock Holmes movie series by Warner Brothers.

However, while the two have played Sherlock before, Marvel directors Joe and Anthony Russo refused to use any references to the detective in Avengers: Infinity War. Speaking in the film's commentary as part of Infinity Wars new digital HD release (via Screen Rant), Joe Russo and co-writer Stephen McFeely explain the reason why they didn't drop any hints of Sherlock in the Avengers installment.

Not only does McFeely think that it might alienate fans who don't follow the Sherlock series or the movies, saying that "It's a meta-joke that requires you to be a fan of other movies," Joe thinks that the joke is just too easy.

"It's also a very obvious joke. Not that we can't be accused of having made obvious jokes before. But I guess it is our movie, so we can pick and choose the obvious jokes we wanna put in it," the director explained in the commentary.

Sure the directors might have wanted to give fans an enjoyable film, but based on the comment it looks like Joe and his brother Anthony would rather not give away "obvious jokes" for fan service. Besides, the jokes don't really move the film forward in any way, do they?

Avengers: Infinity War is currently available on digital HD. Its sequel, Avengers 4, is set to premiere on May 3, 2019.
