David Tennant will be playing the Fourteenth Doctor in the upcoming Doctor Who 60th anniversary special, The Power of the Doctor. However, after the announcement of Ncuti Gatwa as the next doctor following Jodie Whittaker and Tennant had already played the role of the Tenth Doctor, his return confused many.
Gatwa will be the Fifteenth Doctor after Tennant’s second tenure as the 14th Time Lord. So, how does it happen?
David Tennant’s Return as the Fourteenth Doctor
Instead of a new face, the Thirteenth Doctor (Whitaker) morphed into the fan-favorite Time Lord, Tennant.
This surely surprised many, a big tease to the upcoming 60th anniversary special next year. This just means Tennant will play the Fourteenth Doctor's role in the three-episode special.
According to ScreenRant, the Jessica Jones star’s depiction of the Fourteenth Doctor is similar to his portrayal of the Tenth Doctor. He even acknowledged his 2005 role by feeling his teeth.
The actor’s return is to possibly open new possibilities for the character instead of limiting what he can do due to the Tenth Doctor’s existing storyline.
One possible reason for the two doctors’ similarity may be related to the Master’s forced regeneration messing with the Doctor’s regenerative ability.
The Thirteenth Doctor may have reversed the Master’s move to steal her body, reverting to a familiar face instead of featuring a new one.

Showrunner Discusses David Tennant’s Return
Returning showrunner Russell T. Davies discussed Tennant’s return but didn’t reveal what happened to the transition.
“Maybe this is a missing story or a parallel world. Or a dream, or a trick, or a flashback,” he said. “The only thing I can confirm is that it’s going to be spectacular, as two of our greatest stars reunite for the battle of a lifetime.”
He then teased that more shocking surprises would come with the revelation of the Fourteenth Doctor.

“If you thought the appearance of David Tennant was a shock, we’ve got plenty more surprises on the way,” he teased. “The path to Ncuti’s Fifteenth Doctor is laden with mystery, horror, robots, puppets, danger, and fun! And how is it connected to the return of the wonderful Donna Noble? How, what, why? We’re giving you a year to speculate, and then all hell lets loose!”
Aside from Tennant, the upcoming anniversary special will feature several familiar characters, like Colin Baker, Paul McGann, and Sophie Aldred. There are also major cameos happening that fans have to wait and see.
Doctor Who: The Power of the Doctor will be out in November 2023.
