When the official previews for the upcoming Magic: The Gathering set Zendikar Rising launched last week, Wizards of the Coast, revealed the new cycle of modal double-faced (MDFC) dual lands known as Pathways.
In Zendikar Rising, there are six Pathways that produce ally and enemy-colored mana, so there are only four missing dual combinations that are not featured in the upcoming set, but Magic head designer Mark Rosewater confirmed that there was originally ten MDFC dual lands in the cycle he designed, and that the other four will be released in the first 2021 MTG set, Kaldheim.
When talking about how Zendikar Rising was designed in a blog posted on WotC's website., Rosewater confirmed that the other four MDFC dual lands that did not make it in Zendikar Rising will be released in the Viking-inspired set called Kaldheim, which is expected to release in Winter of 2021.
"So, I put together a few weeks of meetings, and we made some MDFCs. We made a lot of MDFCs, a surprisingly large amount actually. I showed them off to Aaron, and he was able to use them to help quiet most of the skepticism. The thing that seemed to seal the deal, interestingly, was a bunch of MDFC designs I'd made years earlier (I tracked down all my old designs from our mini team)—a ten-card cycle I'd made of MDFC dual lands. The moment people saw those, they were like, "We have to make these." (Six of them appear in Zendikar Rising, with the remaining four appearing in Kaldheim.) "
Last week, Rosewater said that the "other four are coming very soon" in his response to a fan's question, and now we know when they will be released.
