Here’s The Real Reason Why Han Solo Ended Up Getting Frozen In Carbonite

Han Solo (Harrison Ford) getting frozen in carbonite in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back might have been one of the smuggler's defining moments in the galaxy far, far away, but George Lucas didn't really plan for the carbonite to happen.

Detailing the origin of carbonite Han Solo, Screen Rant talks about how Harrison Ford's indecisiveness gave the Star Wars smuggler one of his iconic moments. Unlike Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher, Ford had only been contracted to return for one sequel to Star Wars: A New Hope because the actor was unsure about reprising his role in Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. Ford had a surge in popularity after A New Hope and Indiana Jones, and at one point the actor hoped that Lucas would kill Han in a the sequel through a heroic way.

Unsure of whether they wanted to kill Han off, Lucas and his team of Star Wars writers decided to freeze Han in carbonite, leaving the character the opportunity to return.

That's a pretty interesting detail that shows Ford's history with the Star Wars franchise. Ford didn't seem to want to have to return for the third entry in the Star Wars original trilogy. Luckily, producer Howard Kazanjan ended up convincing Ford to reprise his role as everyone's favorite Star Wars smuggler.

Thanks to Ford, Lucas, his Star Wars writers and Kazanjan, we have the epic Han Solo carbonite moment in Star Wars.
