Here's a Detailed Experience of Launching Magic: The Gathering to the Public 27 Years Ago


27 years ago, Wizards of the Coast offiically launched Magic: The Gathering at GenCon 1993, and today, early WotC employee Dave Howell has shared detials about his experiences from launching the popular trading card game to the public (and game industry) for the very first time.

In the post, Howell talks about the first competitive deck archetypes and the "weenie pack" challenge that let players build decks from three Starter decks and three booster packs.Each of those Starter packs are valued to be around $10,000 right now; There was even a rumor that some people threw aaway their Alpha products that were demoed during GenCon, and if you're a long-time Magic player, Alpha featured some of the game's most valuable cards including the Black Lotus and the Power 9 cards. I bet they're regretting that now.
