Helena Bonham Carter recently shared how she clearly feels about the internet’s cancel culture. Not only had Carter defended Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling against backlash from Potterheads, but she had also ‘vindicated’ Johnny Depp from his trial with ex-wife Amber Heard.
Johnny Depp may have won the defamation trial against his now ex-wife Amber back in June, but he is working on regaining his fame in Hollywood. Helena Bonham Carter has revealed her own verdict on the whole situation, setting Depp as an example of the ‘lack of understanding’ behind cancel culture.
In an interview with The Times, Carter opens how someone’s personal life should not even plant any impact on their career, asserting that taking a closer look on millions of people would ‘ban’ them from Hollywood. The actress can’t stand the thought that such would limit the opportunities from those who deserve it in spite of their background. Read her full quote below:
“Do you ban a genius for their sexual practices? There would be millions of people who—if you looked closely enough at their personal life—would disqualify them. You can’t ban people. I hate cancel culture. It has become quite hysterical and there’s a kind of witch hunt and a lack of understanding.”

Followed by a question as to whether or not the actress thinks there is a possibility for redemption for people bearing problematic pasts, she compares Kevin Spacey, who was accused of multiple sexual assault charges, with co-star Depp’s current situation. “I don’t think there is for someone like Kevin Spacey. And Johnny certainly went through it.”
Helena Bonham Carter has often co-starred with Johnny Depp on multiple projects in Tim Burton movies that she had grown close enough to call him family; in fact, Depp is the godfather to two of her children with former partner Burton.
With this, Carter expresses she feels that the Pirates of the Caribbean star is ‘completely vindicated’ after the high-profile trial with Heard. She goes on to add, “I think he’s fine now. Totally fine.”
With Johnny Depp working on getting back on his feet in Hollywood, one of his highly anticipated returns is on Pirates of the Caribbean as the iconic Captain Jack Sparrow. However, this rumor has yet to be proven true, as the actor himself made it clear he does not wish to return to the franchise nor work for Disney, no matter the price they offer him.
