HBO's Watchmen: New Featurette Offers More Plot Plus an Interesting Batman v Superman Reference

Next month will see the release of Damon Lindelof's Watchmen, and to help hype up the show, HBO has released a new featurette giving us more on the series. We get a lot of new clips and info, plus what I thought was an interesting reference to Batman v Superman.

For one, we finally know that the ‘Rorschach cult' is officially called the 7th Cavalry, and they're a terrorist organization in the show. We don't really know what they're aim is, but it looks like they're attacking cops and their families, forcing the police to put on masks themselves.

There's also discussion about the show delving into the difference between characters with and without masks, and Ozymandias (Jeremy Irons) says something about how masks "make men cruel."

Sound familiar?

"Men fall from the sky. The gods hurl thunderbolts. Innocents die. That's how it starts; the fever, the rage, the feeling of powerlessness that turns good men cruel."

I thought it was kind of an obscure reference for Watchmen, but then I realized that Batman v Superman was directed by Zack Snyder, who had also helmed the movie adaptation of Watchmen. The series doesn't take place in the same timeline, but I thought it was a fun nod—whether it was deliberate or not.

I'm actually very excited for HBO's Watchmen, and I'm really interested to see how it expands on the original story. I really loved The Leftovers, and I'm hoping Lindelof manages to improve on his craft with this series.

Catch Watchmen on HBO when it comes out Oct. 20.
