HBO Max Cancels Another Beloved DC Series

Prior to James Gunn and Peter Safran's unveiling of the DCU slate, Warner Bros, DC, and HBO Max have been canceling several projects that have been on the air or were in the works due to the impending reboot of the franchise across film and television.

One of the TV shows whose fate remained unknown was the spy drama Pennyworth, the Batman series centering on the younger days of Alfred Pennyworth which aired on Epix before moving to HBO Max for its third season. Now, after the mega DCU announcement, we finally have an update on its future.

According to Variety, HBO Max has canceled Pennyworth (or Pennyworth: The Origins of Batman's Butler for its third season) after three seasons. This comes just days after DC Studios announced the slate for the DCU franchise and months after the final episode of the third season aired on the streamer.

"While HBO Max is not moving forward with another season of Pennyworth: The Origin of Batman’s Butler, we are very thankful to creator Bruno Heller and executive producers Matthew Patnick, Danny Cannon and John Stephens, along with Warner Bros. Television, for their brilliant, unique, gripping depiction of the origin of Alfred Pennyworth, one of the most iconic characters in the Batman world," an HBO Max spokesperson said in a statement.

"An incredible blend of action, drama and humor, for three seasons, Pennyworth: The Origin of Batman’s Butler has taken fans on a mind-bending ride into Alfred’s eccentric world and the beginnings of cutting-edge super heroes and super villains."

The news didn't come as a surprise for fans since HBO Max also recently canceled Doom Patrol and Titans and the series was also absent or not addressed during the unveiling of the new DCU slate.

While it might be disappointing for fans and audiences of the series, it was able to last for three seasons which is an impressive run, and, who knows, maybe DC Studios could revisit this idea down the line as they will go deep into the DC library as the DCU moves forward later on.
