Hayley Atwell on Steve Rogers and Agent 13’s Kiss and Budding Romance in Captain America: Civil War

Peggy Carter does not approve.

Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter may have fallen in love in Captain America: The First Avenger, but their love had no chance since Steve was placed in ice to be preserved. Meanwhile, Peggy went on in life, grew old, and founded the S.H.I.E.L.D.

Steve may have had no chance with Peggy, but he does now with her grandniece, Sharon Carter, who also happens to be one of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s best agents, Agent 13.

Naturally, this new romance in Civil War, which saw Steve and Sharon kiss, didn't sit well with fans, and Peggy Carter actress Hayley Atwell does not approve as well.

In an interview with IGN, Atwell said, rather jokingly though:

Well, first of all she'd be turning over in her grave.
She'd be like ‘no.' And she'd inject herself with the blue serum and become a super villain. She'd break out of her coffin and ground [Sharon]. She'd ground her. Then she'd kick Steve's ass as well.

The first signs of Steve and Sharon's romance were teased in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, but it took a couple of years before the two managed to get their first kiss, which took place right after the two attended Peggy's funeral.

On this, Atwell spoke more seriously in the interview. She said:

I just feel that, you know — I wouldn't want to date my great aunt's guy. It just feels like it crosses an incestuous boundary. And Peggy just died.
That's even more disrespectful, right? It's like, ‘don't touch that."' You can't tap that!

Another reason why Atwell doesn't approve of their relationship is the recent turn of events in the comics, Captain America: Steve Rogers #1, where it was revealed that Steve had been a Hydra agent all along.

Atwell added:

She'd want the best for her and she'd want her dating a good guy. And now with this whole ‘Hail Hydra" business, I don't know if Steve's good enough for her," she said. "So on all levels, it's just a big fat no.

I have to agree with Atwell. Even though Steve and Sharon's romance had been teased prior to Civil War, their relationship and kiss seems a bit forced and out of place.

Agent 13's relationship with Peggy was revealed only during the eulogy and during most of Civil War, Sharon had been a spy helping Team Cap with intel inside the government. I'm not sure what will become of Steve and Sharon's relationship, but I think Marvel may choose to change it with enough clamor against it.
