Hayao Miyazaki has been a legend in the animation field. The animator and director has created some of the best animated films in cinematic history, including Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro, and Princess Mononoke.
Now, as the iconic artist continues his work on his upcoming animated movie, How Do You Live, the legendary Studio Ghibli co-founder has been slated to receive a major award celebrating all that he's done for cinema and animation.
The Hollywood Reporter just recently put up an announcement regarding the Los Angeles Film Critics Association's (LAFCA) decision regarding its coveted Career Achievement Award, and it looks like the honor is going to the beloved animator, Miyazaki.
However, while LAFCA is planning to award Miyazaki next January in California, there's still no word whether the filmmaker will be there to attend the ceremony and accept the award himself.
LAFCA is also planning to give away its other top awards during its annual awards dinner on January 12 at the InterContinental Hotel and the organization will choose the recipients by votation on December 9 this year.
According to LAFCA president Claudio Puig, it wasn't difficult deciding on Miyazaki for the organization's Lifetime Achievement award.
"We are thrilled to be presenting our Career Achievement award to Hayao Miyazaki, who has transported our members — and audiences around the world — to his enchanting, indelible and vividly imaginative worlds through his gorgeous and thematically rich animation," Puig said in a statement. "The way in which Miyazaki inspires an audience's sense of wonder is unmatched. I particularly admire his depiction of self-sufficient, determined and courageous female characters who don't need saving. He has explained his cinematic approach simply: ‘Any woman is just as capable of being a hero as any man.' These words resonate more powerfully than ever in our current times."
Miyazaki's work has certainly been a positive influence to so many around the world and the animator has created an expansive legacy in the field of film and animation.
Miyazaki's upcoming movie, How Do You Live, is set for release sometime 2020.
