It looks like Stargirl, the next DC Universe show, is shaping up nicely. A number of major casting additions have been made in recent weeks, including Joel McHale as Starman and Lou Ferrigno Jr. as Hourman. The JSA (Justice Society of America) fan-service continues as Doctor Mid-Nite has been announced for the show and he will be played by Haunting of House Hill star Henry Thomas.
Also known as the introspective surgeon Dr. Charles McNider, Dr. Mid-Nite is a brilliant and forward-thinking medical pioneer and a founding member of the JSA. With his trusty owl, he acts as the team's resident doctor and detective.
Entertainment Weekly confirmed that Thomas will have a recurring role as Mid-Nite, which makes sense since this isn't a JSA show; it's a Stargirl series. Still, all of this love for the Justice Society is really nice to see, which seems to be a benefit coming from the DC Universe service. With Doom Patrol coming next year, we could see more obscure DC heroes in our televisions and computers soon.
Stargirl is centered on Courtney Whitmore, a struggling high-schooler who relocates to Blue Valley, Nebraska when her mom gets married. After discovering her new stepfather was Starman's sidekick Stripesy, Courtney uses his old Cosmic Staff to become Stargirl and inspire an unlikely group of young heroes to fight villains of the past.
No release date for the series has been announced, though it is scheduled for a 2019 release.
