DC Universe's upcoming Stargirl series has just made its most surprising casting yet, revealing that Community star Joel McHale is going to be Starman. It's an interesting choice to be sure, given McHale's history of shows but it could make for a good watch if he is used right. Plus, it is nice seeing the lead star's predecessor in the series, which should make for some good interactions.
Reported by Variety, McHale will have a recurring role in the series and will be based on the Golden Age version of the character. This makes his casting even more interesting since we all figured that McHale would be better as the more modern version of Starman that was introduced by James Robinson.
The Golden Age version of Starman was one of the more prominent members of the Justice Society of America. He uses an anti-gravity weapon called the Cosmic Staff and has put away a number of bad guys with it.
His character has been described as follows:
"A courageous and confident superhero, Starman is a member of the Justice Society of America. He wields a mysterious anti-gravity weapon called the cosmic staff and has a longtime sidekick namedStripesy, who is better known as Courtney Whitmore's stepfather, Pat Dugan."
Stargirl centers on Courteney Whitmore (Brec Bassinger), a high school sophomore who inspires an unlikely group of young heroes to stop the villains of the past. The series comes from executive producers Greg Berlanti, Geoff Johns, and Sarah Schechter, based on DC comic book characters created by Geoff Johns. No release date for the series has been revealed.
