Harry Potter's Werewolf Might Play Ares, Wonder Woman's Foe

British actor David Thewlis of the Harry Potter movies was one of the actors confirmed to be among the cast members in DC Entertainment's Wonder Woman as early as a year ago. But it's only recently that sources apparently close to the movie have leaked that he will play Ares, the God of War and the Amazon princess' sworn enemy.

Batman-News claims it has mulitple sources swearing to this bit of casting. Thewlis, the human actor, and a bunch of CGI will come together to form the foreboding Greek deity responsible for driving humankind to launch all sorts of wars.

Thewlis the actor is used to undergoing various cinematic transformations to concoct out-of-this-world characters. He is best known as Remus Lupin, Harry Potter's afflicted mentor who turns into a werewolf during certain moon phases. Thewlis first appeared in the series in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban in 2004, and stayed with the franchise until the last film, Harry Potter and the DeathlyHallows: Part 2 in 2011.

Early in his career, Thewlis was one of the good guys who tried to stop Marlon Brando's human-animal DNA intermixing in The Island of Dr. Moreau. Then as a spoiled king, he let loose an army against Sean Connery's CGI dragon in Dragonheart.

There had been rumors that Arnold Schwarzenegger would be cast as Ares. However, if these sources' reports turn out to be true, Thewlis does have the gravitas, emotional power, and the regal snobbery that are the proper qualities of an Olympian god. The guy can quote a phone book listing and still make you feel like a rodent.

Wonder Woman is directed by Patty Jenkins and starts Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Robin Wright, and Connie Nielsen. It will open in theaters on June 2, 2017.
