Han and Chewie Meet for the First Time in Concept Art for Solo: A Star Wars Story

[THIS ARTICLE CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY]

Solo: A Star Wars Story was filled with some very interesting scenes, and one of them was the meeting between Han Solo and Chewbacca. Thanks to DK Publishing, we actually have some concept art of that scene, and it even has Han wearing a different outfit from what we got in the final product.

The concept for Solo took on the dynamics of a "buddy picture" early on. Longtime friends and partners Chewbacca and Han Solo would meet for the first time in this tale. It was not destined to be a friendly meeting, however, as this concept art by Jack Dundman illustrates.

Original trilogy fans will immediately recognize how parallel the scene is to Luke being dropped in the Rancor pit in Return of the Jedi. The lighting is also familiar to that scene in Empire Strikes Back when Han is thrown into a cell after he's tortured by Vader.

I thought this scene was a great way to set-up the two characters meeting, and Solo perfectly handled the way Han and Chewie became the best of friends.

Just a fun fact: the Legends reason why Han knows how to speak Wookie (Shyriiwook) is because growing up, he was friends with a female Wookie chef. I don't know if that could be applied in the canon universe, but it would still make sense if it was added to the lore.
