The 2004 film Catwoman was a notorious flop at the box office and was panned by critics. However, it has gained some cult following years later and became a guilty pleasure for some viewers. Even just recently, rapper Saweetie had Halle Berry's Catwoman as her Halloween costume. There is certainly a renewed interest in Catwoman today. Now, its star has spoken out about wanting to do a remake of the film.
Speaking with Jake Hamilton, on the fresh of her upcoming Netflix film Bruised which she both stars and directs, Berry expressed her interest in directing a remake of Catwoman and even offered what her take would look like if she would be given the opportunity. She said, "I would love to direct Catwoman. If I can get ahold of that now, knowing what I know, having had this experience, and reimagine that world the way I reimagined this story. Bruised was written for a white Irish Catholic 25-year-old girl, and I got to reimagine it. I wish I could go back and reimagine Catwoman and redo that. Have a redo on that, now knowing what I know [about directing]."
She continued, "I would have Catwoman saving the world like most male superheroes do, and not just saving women from their faces cracking off. I would make the stakes a lot higher, and I think make it more inclusive of both men and women."
Catwoman is set to make her big-screen return soon through the upcoming film The Batman in which she would be played by Zoe Kravitz. Chances for Berry to direct her own Catwoman film might be slim to none, but she could get the opportunity to do a solo spin-off film of Kravitz's Catwoman if the studio would be interested to develop that.
Bruised has been receiving solid reviews so far from the critics which show that Berry already has a decent track record as a director. Will she be a good choice as the director of a Catwoman movie? We don't know exactly. But she played the character before so she knows what it feels like to be on the suit. Let's just see if Berry's wishes would come true at some point.
