Guillermo Del Toro Talks Cancelled Justice League Dark Film and Why He Doesn't Like Superheroes

Guillermo Del Toro is a director known for having amazing visuals in his movies, whether it be The Shape of Water, Pacific Rim, and Pan's Labyrinth. This is why fans were excited when he was rumored to direct Justice League Dark, a movie that meets his M.O. in terms of visuals and monsters. Obviously, that project never got to happen but the director recently opened up about his work on the movie.

Del Toro spoke with ComicBook.com about the film, confirming that he co-wrote the screenplay and is a fan of the characters in that group. He clearly is passionate about this film and it would have been awesome seeing them under Del Toro's pen but we at least have that animated film to enjoy.

"Well, I co-wrote a whole screenplay on Justice League Dark for Warner Bros., so that's your answer. I love Deadman, I love Demon, I love Swamp Thing. Zatanna. That's a universe, is one thing. I'm very attracted to that side of the DC Universe."

Funnily enough, while Del Toro is a fan of Justice League Dark, the director is not a fan of the typical superhero characters that frequent comic books. He prefers having monsters in these superhero movies, which is probably why the movie appealed to him in the first place.

"But I'm not a superhero guy. For me to like a superhero, the superhero needs to be a monster. I'm not into those things, I've never been. I'm always in favor of monster narratives. That's what I like. Or, I love noir. I love police, crime dramas. I love science fiction."

Justice League Dark is reportedly still in production, though Guillermo Del Toro is no longer involved. An animated film of the group plus Batman is available now on Blu-Ray and DVD.
