Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio Teaser Introduces Ewan McGregor's Sebastian J. Cricket

It has been a truly long wait but we finally have the first teaser for Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio film. The animated retelling of the puppet's story may have been confirmed to be a darker look at the beloved fairytale but it does have a bright and cheerful cricket played by none other than Ewan McGregor!

The first teaser for Netflix's Pinocchio opens with the cricket lighting a lamp, opening a book, and writing on the blank pages. "I want to tell you a story," the cricket declares, adding that it's a story that many people believe they already know. However, the insect, who calls himself Sebastian J. Cricket, says that he was there when it happened and that he actually lived in the heart of the wooden boy.

It's an awesome introduction to the character who was known as Jiminy Cricket in the Disney animated classic. However, Guillermo del Toro's version of the tale explores the original story by Carlo Collodi.

The teaser is just the start for the highly anticipated stop-motion feature that has faced several troubles over the years. Pinocchio was first announced back in 2008 but ended up in development hell. Luckily, Netflix decided to save the project and it is now expected to premiere later this year.

Pinocchio is directed by Guillermo del Toro and Mark Gustafson, and is based on Carlo Collodi's 1883 Italian novel. The film features the voices of Ewan McGregor as Sebastian J. Cricket, Gregory Mann as Pinocchio, David Bradley as Master Geppetto, Ron Perlman as Mangiafuoco, and Tilda Swinton as the Fairy with Turquoise Hair.

Other cast members include Christoph Waltz as the Fox, Cate Blanchett as Sprezzatura the Monkey, Tim Blake Nelson as the Coachman, Finn Wolfhard as Lampwick/Lucignolo, John Turturro as Master Cherry, and Burn Gorman as the Carabiniere. Pinocchio has not yet been given an official release date but will premiere on Netflix in December 2022.
