Guillermo del Toro Sets His Next Animated Film for Netflix

Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio became a huge success on Netflix and it is now considered the frontrunner to win the Best Animated Feature Film category at the upcoming Academy Awards. The film has been receiving raves for months ever since its release and the director has been applauded for his creative take on the classic story.

Now, it looks like Guillermo del Toro has found his next animated film project as Deadline has confirmed that the Oscar-winning director is working on an adaptation of the Kazuo Ishiguro fantasy novel The Buried Giant for Netflix. He is also co-writing the screenplay with Dennis Kelly (Matilda the Musical).

The novel's synopsis follows "an elderly Briton couple, Axl and Beatrice, living in a fictional post-Arthurian England in which no one is able to retain long-term memories." The director will be collaborating with ShadowMachine’s stop motion studio, which also worked on Pinocchio.

"Guillermo del Toro is a visionary filmmaker and master of his craft. We couldn’t be more proud of the prestigious recognition for his Pinocchio, and we’re pleased to continue our creative partnership as he develops his next project with Netflix," the streamer's film chairman Scott Stuber said in a statement.

Del Toro added, "The Buried Giant continues my animation partnership with Netflix and our pursuit of stop-motion as a medium to tell complex stories and build limitless worlds. It is a great honor and greater responsibility for me to direct this screenplay which Dennis Kelly and I are adapting from Kazuo Ishiguro’s profound and imaginative novel."

It is certainly exciting to hear that del Toro is working on another animated film and the project looks very promising. With the success of Pinocchio, there will be high expectations that the director will deliver the same quality.
